Vanishing Glaciers – What else besides water is lost?

Mountain glaciers are shrinking worldwide. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of glacier-fed streams are vanishing. With the support of The Nomis Foundation, we study in an unprecendented effort the microbial life in these streams that drain the roof of our planet.

For the first time, a dedicated team samples the unsampled, microbial biofilms in some of the remotest glacier-fed streams on Earth. Expeditions take us to the icy islands of the highest peaks worldwide. A wealth of microbial and biogeochemical analyses are performed by an international team of researchers in Switzerland, Luxembourg, USA and Saudi Arabia.
